III (published in 2014 by Trolley books)..came about by my wanting to take a break from the digital documentary mode. The starting point is.. 'what can i add to the canon of 20thC American work?' I try to always begin with.. 'what do i know? and who am i to speak?'. Maybe the answer is not much, but i must be true to myself and enjoy the process. The result is strangely unconscious homage and play. Most clearly, i wanted to make a book that seemed to have a hidden meaning and logic just beyond the edge of comprehension. III is not a 'nice', clean , linear project i wanted to test those limits at a time when theres a lot of knowing 'good' work about. What appeals to me is that making III recalls a time of innocence, both in me and in the bigger picture of the 'west coast' of my mind.
